5 empowering books every woman should read by the time she is 30

It has been 108 years since we have formally acknowledged, appreciated and celebrated women and their contribution to society on a global scale. Kool Kanya wishes you a very happy Women’s Day!

To commemorate this day, we’ve compiled a list of books (and podcasts!) by women, for women. From personal memoirs to practical advice, here are the stories of women from around the world.

We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

In 2019, this should not be a topic that is up for debate any longer, but if you needed more convincing, look no further. Adichie pens a poignant essay that breaks down feminism in our modern era and inspires readers to envision and build a better world. Her prose is warm and engaging, and her personal experiences immerse you in her story. She argues her point with a calm rationale that will open your eyes and make you embrace becoming a feminist.

Simple, short and beautifully written, this is a story you would not regret reading.

Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol S. Dweck

Adages like ‘try and try until you succeed’ and ‘failure is the stepping stone to success’ have been drilled into our heads since we were children, but we often find that reality doesn’t necessarily comply. It isn’t easy to pick up and start over when you’ve been knocked down, but Carol Dweck is here to tell you why (and more importantly, how) you should do exactly that. Dweck argues that people who look at life as a learning opportunity are guaranteed to be more successful – and she has the research to back it up. If you’re looking for some motivation to turn yourself around, this book is for you.

Playing Big: Find Your Voice, Your Mission, Your Message by Tara Mohr

With the plethora of self-help books available today, it’s almost impossible to find one that is absolutely groundbreaking. This book is honestly not very different and will not leave you with any earth-shattering revelations, but it’s one of the few career books that aren’t geared towards corporate women. Playing Big is filled with tips and tricks to help women to chase after bigger things, no matter what field they’re in. Mohr believes that you should be more loyal to your dreams than your fears. This is perfect for creatives, and if you find that books like Lean In and Daring Greatly aren’t your cup of tea, you might want to try this one out.
