6 pieces to give your workwear wardrobe a stylish makeover

The corporate world can be boring, but your workwear doesn’t have to be.

We agree that the button-up shirt and formal trousers combo is the safest bet when you are headed for a meeting in the boardroom.

However, you can add some personality to your formal attire, without spending too much cash.

Investing in just a few versatile accessories can help you up your fashion game, without breaking any of the workwear rules of formal workspace.

Hit ‘add to cart’ on the following items to be the most stylish person on the floor:

A Blazer

A blazer is a versatile piece of clothing that can add warmth, texture, or colour to any monotone outfit.

  • Find a well-fitted blazer in a solid colour and keep it handy for days when you are in the mood to wear your favourite cartoon-print t-shirt, without looking inappropriate.
  • On the other hand, you can also choose a blazer in bright yellow or cherry red to stand out in the crowd.
  • If you aren’t experimental when it comes to fashion, pick a neutral shade, like black or navy blue, that goes with everything in your wardrobe. A colleague would keep her black blazer in the office drawer, and throw it over her cutesy skater dresses when she had an impromptu meeting to attend.
  • The blazer also worked for those extra-chilly days when adding another layer was mandatory. I’ve seen women style their blazers in the most offbeat ways. For instance, over a maxi dress, a short skirt and blouse or even a simple kurta worn over palazzo pants.

This piece of clothing truly can elevate any outfit and take it from whatever to wow!

High-Waisted Pants

I have been a part of the workforce for over 8 years now. I can confidently say that there is no piece of clothing as versatile as some good old high-waisted pants or jeggings – whatever you are comfortable in.

As far as I am concerned, I can run marathons in mine.

  • You never have to worry about how to style them because you can throw on whatever you feel like, from a kurta to a t-shirt, or even a crop top and it’ll still look good.
  • For a more put-together look, pair your high-waisted pants with a fitted shirt or blouse with exaggerated sleeves and you’ll also qualify to win some praise.

These pants go from workwear to night-out ready in a jiffy too.

A Broad Belt

A simple belt is a necessity to hold those loose trousers in place. But a broad belt is an investment every fashion-conscious individual should make.

  • Pick one with a fancy buckle, or texture on the belt for more effect.
  •  You can experiment and tie each end like a knot, or loop the tail ends.
  • A belt will help you wear oversized clothes that don’t flatter your frame, by bringing attention to your waist. An oversized sweater, a jacket, a loose-fitted dress or even a long skirt would all look fab with the addition of a belt.
  • The trick here is to be creative with the way you want to wear the accessory and choose which part of your body you are comfortable drawing attention to.

Geometric Earrings

I have two pairs of big, round earrings that I always keep in my purse- one in gold and the other in silver. The reason? They can be worn with any outfit, be it an Indian salwar kurta or a formal suit.

  • Buy the simplest pair that you can find as they are the easiest to pair with almost everything in your wardrobe. Check which size looks good on you.
  • Also, having both gold and silver versions are also a master move that makes sure you always have a backup!

White/Black Shirt

There’s nothing easier to style than a white or black shirt. These are also a must-have in every wardrobe, formal or not.

  • Wear your shirt tucked in with a pleated or A-line skirt or as a blouse with a funky cotton sari, it all works!
  • If you are bored of the mainstream looks, then wear your white shirt as a jacket with a graphic tee or camisole.
  • I’ve often worn my white shirt belted up on the waist for some definition. Plus, all-white and all-black looks are classics, that you simply can’t get enough of

Wedges

Get yourself comfy wedges in:

  • A neutral shade like black, grey, tan or nude.
  • Buy a pair that you can run around in, and also walk-the-talk in for hours.
  • These can be your everyday shoes that match most of your outfits effortlessly.

Also, if you haven’t noticed already, all these items put together make a stylish outfit that is my go-to for most meetings or days when I have no clue what to wear.
