Heading for an internship? Here are 7 things you MUST watch

College is over (bummer), and so is your grace period to chill out and party like an animal. There won’t be any projects or festivals to save you, neither that attendance you have to worry about… welcome, reality. It’s time to get into the world you’ve always dreamt of, and the first stepping stone to it is internships. These short (at times longer) work experiences gear you up for the actual job and help you get your shit together.

Whether you’re a beginner or it’s your comeback, if you’re wondering how you’ll get through your stint, there is always cinema to help (yes you read that right). We have some of the best teachers (read interns) from the movies and the web world who taught us a thing or two about this circus. From Wake Up Sid to The Pursuit of Happyness, here’s what you need to watch before you get set, go!

Grazia Intern Diaries (2018)

Two young girls, Tara and Anika (Shivani Singh and Hira Ashar) get selected for a fashion internship at Grazia magazine. These girls want to make it big in the fashion industry, and so, they must do everything right to earn the last spot at getting the full-time role. From fashion emergencies to evolving at their craft, these girls try to stay on top of the fast-paced work culture.

Kool Kanya tip: It might be a crazy ride, but if you have a partner in crime, life is much more comfortable. Fashion business can be overwhelming, keep your head on your shoulders, think straight, make the right kind of friends and swim on!

Girl In The City (2016)

Meera Sehgal (Mithila Palkar) is an aspiring fashion designer who is stuck in the confines of little Dehradun and a controlling father. To fulfil her dreams and get more exposure, she must think bigger. When she receives an internship offer from a fashion house, she takes the leap. She navigates through the new city, job and friends learning essential lessons on the way.

Kool Kanya tip: You might have crazy bosses to deal with, and may even have to serve them hot espressos each time they look at you, but if you manage to get above that, hard work does pay off. Also, if your boss takes credit for your work, not cool, speak up!

Official Chukyagiri (2016)

Spandan Chukya (Sunny Kaushal) is a recent college pass out, roaring to join the business world. He begins his internship at an MNC, Analog. He does know that Mumbai is the city where all your dreams come true, but he has no idea what it will take to make that happen. On his long journey from Meerut to Mumbai, via love and loss, we see the corporate world through his eyes – the ideals that he comes with, in contrast to the big, bad world of business management.

Kool Kanya tip: No amount of knowledge from your MBA books and tips from your teachers can prepare you for the real world out there. You only learn on the job, irrespective of your degrees. So brace yourselves with open arms and learn to unlearn!

The Intern (2015)

Widower Ben Whittaker (Robert De Niro) discovers that retirement is too dull for him. He joins an e-commerce fashion startup, run by Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway), as a senior intern. As he tries to win over his boss, he slowly becomes everyone’s favourite. He offers advice to his colleagues on love, life and work, and even helps his boss through some tough decisions.

Kool Kanya tip: Congeniality always wins plus points, plus it’s never too late to start something new. Whether you’re the least favourite at work or not, experience always talks. If you’ve got something to offer your boss, don’t fear, you will always be appreciated for giving your honest opinion.

The Internship (2013)

Two salesmen’s—Billy McMahon and Nick Campbell (Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson)—careers have gone for a toss when they are fired from their jobs. They find their way into the coveted internship at Google, where they compete with a group of young, tech-savvy geniuses for a shot at employment. Their unique working styles and their willingness to learn something new gives them a win.

Kool Kanya tip: When you’re finding yourself in a rut at work, it’s time to learn new skills and get back roaring. Irrespective of your age or experience, you’ve got to update yourself with the latest tricks and keep yourself relevant. Also, being tech-savvy is a major plus, clearly!

Wake Up Sid (2009)

When Sidharth Mehra (Ranbir Kapoor), a spoilt, carefree, wealthy brat fails his final year exams, things change in his life. He decides to move out of his parent’s home and shifts to Aisha’s (Konkana Sen Sharma), his new friend. Sid finds a photography internship at a magazine, Mumbai Beat, where Aisha works too. The internship changes him to become motivated, more responsible and productive.

Kool Kanya tip: You may not have your full life figured out yet, but if you keep faith in what you love doing the most, you always find a way out. Or meet people who help you in that process. And when you get that first paycheque, it’s a reality check: you’ve grown.

The Pursuit Of Happyness (2006)

When an entrepreneur loses the only means to make money for his life, the product on which he wants to do his business, he becomes an intern stockbroker. Homeless, with pending debts, Chris Gardner (Will Smith) struggles constantly trying to make ends meet. Irrespective of a turmoil in his personal life, he tries hard to earn his position.

Kool Kanya tip: If you work hard enough and long enough, you really can achieve anything. The next time you wonder whether to show up at work with that outfit you wore just last weak, remember—there will be a Chris giving an interview in his sweatpants, charming away the interviewers.
