Coming back to your journey to become a video content creator, there are a few things you need to prepare for before you jump headfirst into content creation. So here’s a checklist of items for you to keep in mind:

  1. Video content creation is a full-time job

Before you even completely venture into video content creation, you need to draw a clear line between whether it’s going to be you part-time hobby or a full-time career. If you’re looking to turn it into your main career path, treat it as such from the get-go. Don’t think of it as simply becoming an Instagram or YouTube content creator, think of it as your entreuperenial venture. While becoming a video creator will be a fun-filled journey, it also requires serious commitment. There’s a lot more to it than than simply uploading your video. You’ll be your own cameraman, editor, publicist and manager. So make sure you are ready to dedicate your time and energy to this pursuit.

2. Brush off your degree

While you don’t need to have a degree to be an influencer, that doesn’t mean you can’t leverage your educational background while creating unique content for YouTube or Instagram.

As a video creator, having a background in your niche can help you create informed content. This is especially helpful if you are creating content in specialised fields, such as finance or tech. Having a base to fall back on can make the process that much easier, so leverage that college degree to your advantage and get creative!

3. Get your equipment in order

While you may not need a degree to create content, you definitely need the right equipment. This equipment depends largely on the video creation app or platform you’re targeting. For instance, if you aim to be an Instagram influencer, having a phone with a good camera, and a decent editing application is all you need to get started. However, if you’re producing a video for YouTube, it’s advisable to use a PC or a laptop for editing and uploading your videos. Likewise, if you plan to stream video content on platforms such as Twitch, you’ll need a good quality camera, mic and headset, and a powerful CPU.

While purchasing the right equipment for your set-up can be expensive, think of it as an investment. Make sure you do your research before purchasing and weigh your options wisely because picking the right equipment is half the battle.

4. Polish your skill-set

Since video creation is a one-woman job, you’ll need to brush up on a range of skills, from videography to editing, strategy to marketing. As a video creator, you will also need to cultivate a certain aesthetical sense which will help you select the perfect composition, background and lighting for your videos. Remember, it’s not just the content that makes an impression on the user, it’s every aspect of the video, from the way that it's shot to the camera angles and sound effects.

Especially when it comes to video editing, knowing the basics can take you a long way. Using clever transitions and effects in your video can make a huge difference to the overall outcome. This is also a good way for you to personalise your videos, by adding your own touch to it through the edits that you make.

By making sure that you’ve got your bases covered, you’ll be completely prepared to get started with your career as a video content creator. Of course, this is only the beginning of a lengthy, and hopefully rewarding process.
