Unravelling what it takes to be a successful salesperson

Sales is an important part of business. Whether we’d like to admit it or not, more than creativity and imagination, sales is what drives a business towards growth.

However, creativity and imagination still play an important role in today’s time. If you’re looking for something that enhances and polishes your creative abilities, here’s a chance to hone your skills and raise your power in the fields of digital marketing, content creation, and social media.

Alongside creativity, a good salesperson is exactly what a company needs to get sales and keep moving upward.

How do you figure out if a particular salesperson is better than the average? How can you tell if they’re going to bring you success? A good salesperson’s success is measured by the results they obtain. The more fabulous they are at what they do, the better the results they bring.

However, no salesperson is born with the ability to generate incredible results. Every person in sales has honed a certain set of skills to be good at what they do.

Here, we highlight the skills and personality traits you require to make a career in sales. If you’ve ever Googled, “How to become a good salesperson?”, this blog has all the answers you were looking for!

1. Exude confidence

The first step in becoming a good salesperson is to show confidence even if you’re nervous on the inside. Imagine you get a phone call from a salesperson who falters and isn’t sure about the product they’re selling to you. Would you buy from them? Exactly!

If you’re confident about what you’re selling, you’ve already done half the job!

As a salesperson, you have to appear confident, in control, and informative to the consumer. A good salesperson knows what they’re talking about and can clearly explain the product and its benefits to the consumers.

2. Sell subtly

Rather than selling your product, sell the information and the benefits. A successful salesperson always educates the consumer by providing information to them and wins their confidence by instilling faith.

Don’t sell your product loudly. Rather, sell the benefits of the product quietly and indirectly convince the consumer to believe you and buy from you. Wouldn’t you rather know the benefits of using an organic shampoo before someone tries to persuade you to buy the shampoo?

If you wish to make a successful career in sales, then you need to understand the consumer’s requirements and sell exactly that.

3. Be an insightful salesperson

Customers today are better educated and well-informed about the products and industries. Which is why their sales experience needs to be more than just selling the product with a few basic details they can get off Google.

As a salesperson, you have to be flexible and willing to deviate from the standard sales script. Understand and know your product from the inside-out and learn to sell to the customer in a unique way.

An insightful salesperson can readily identify the consumer’s needs and improvise based on the solutions their product can provide to that particular consumer.

4. Always the optimist

Rejection is part and parcel of a career in sales!

As a salesperson, you have to acquaint yourself with the word “No” as you’re going to hear it on multiple occasions and there’s nothing you can do about it.  To be a successful salesperson, you have to learn to always be upbeat and go through the day with an optimistic attitude.

Rather than letting a rejection drag you down, you need to understand that some things are out of your control. Of course, no one enjoys rejection; but instead of letting it get to you, you can use it as fuel that motivates you even more!

5. Listen to your customers

Have you ever come across salespeople who keep talking over you and trying to convince you without taking no for an answer? They serve as a good example of a bad salesperson.

In contrast, a good and effective salesperson would pause every once in a while and allow their customers to respond. This gives you a chance to understand what the consumer is looking for and match what your company offers with their needs.

Listen to your customer’s problem and then sell a solution to the same.

If you can manage to understand what your consumer requires, you’re sure to generate better sales!

6. Focus on your goals

Any top salesperson is driven and goal-oriented. There is no room for distractions when you have your goals set and wish to work towards them.

If you’re constantly driven by your goals, you’ll be a highly motivated salesperson as you’ll always be focused on the task at hand. If you wish to be a successful salesperson, you must learn to prioritise and organise your tasks in order to achieve the goals you have set for yourself.
