10 wardrobe essentials to power dress like a pro

Being a career girl can be quite a ride. Chasing dreams, meeting goals and exceeding expectations as well as being recognised and rewarded. However, in our bid to give our best professional shot, we often forget that dressing for business is equally important to make that indelible impression in the corporate world.

It can be challenging to look both professional and stylish but the right start to stock your wardrobe with office staples, and alternately wear them with varying separates, can lend versatility to your business style. Here is a guide to make that impressive statement.

1. White button up shirt

White is the new black in a work wardrobe. To be honest, this timeless staple is a must-have. No amount of white shirts or blouses is enough, or should we say the more the merrier? You can team it up with tailored trousers or a skirt, and rest assured that you mean and scream business.

2. Skirt

Just above the knee or a mid-length skirt lends a professional and formal vibe to your style. Make sure the silhouette of the garment complements your body type. If you are lean then opt for a pencil skirt, try a mid-length A-line skirt if you are on the heavier side. You can’t go wrong with it.

3. Blazer

Add in that serious element by pairing your business formals with a well fitting blazer. Choosing neutral shades in white, grey, beige or black is your best bet, but if you want to get a bit experimental, try bright blues or orange or pinks even, for casual Fridays.

4. A bandh gala kurta

A smart mid length bandh gala kurta worn with a well-fitting churidar can make ethnic wear not just stylish but sharp as well. Avoid prints, and stick to solid hues in cotton, or linen. Pair it with mid-length heels or smart flats and you are good to go.

5. Mid-high heels

Wearing flats can be quite casual and wearing 4-inch high heels may look like you are heading to a red carpet event! The middle ground here is to pick something that is comfortable, slightly dressy and fits your style. Avoid showing any toes or having a strap around the ankles. Instead, keep it simple with neutral colour pumps.

6. Hold all bag

A tote bag that holds it all is the bag you need to carry to work. Big enough to fit in your laptop and one which has enough compartments inside to carry your sundry. Just one bag.

7. Fuss-free jewellery

No danglers, no attention grabbers! We would suggest sticking to classic styles — diamond studs or pearl tops, a delicate bracelet or a tiny pendant. Make it conspicuous but not a diversion.

8. Pussybow blouses

There is something about this style that instantly gives you an edge. It’s both stylish and sharp. Invest in one, either in silk, chiffon or nylon, or all.  Pick prints or monochrome hues, as they look great in the boardroom.

9. Sarees

Our traditional clothing can make quite a style statement at work too. A well-starched cotton saree in minimal prints and neutral hues worn with a tailored long line bandh gala blouse can make for quite a powerful sense of style.

10. Casuals

Friday dressing can be fun but it can also get a bit trickier. You don’t want to look like you are heading to the next disco party nor do you want to look awfully formal on a Friday. Our dibs is on a relaxed yet professional look. A pair of classic denim, teamed with a polo t-shirt or a semi-casual top with ballet flats meet the expectations.

So, here you are, power dressing is not as hard as you thought. Heading in the right direction with these separates and weaving them with your staples can not only bring variety to your style but define your personality as well. Go conquer the world!
