Zendaya makes history at the 2022 Emmy nominations

In today’s episode of ‘Badass women to watch out for’, American actress Zendaya has made history at the 2022 Emmy nominations.

The 25-year-old has received nominations in three categories – producing, acting, and music and lyrics – for her stellar work in the critically acclaimed HBO series, Euphoria.

This announcement makes her the youngest nominee ever in the producing category, and the youngest two-time nominee in the lead acting category.

Her nomination in the Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics category comes for two original soundtracks played in the series – ‘Elliot’s Song, and ‘I’m Tired’.

The television series Euphoria – which itself has received 16 nominations in the 2022 Emmys – has arguably been one of the most challenging roles of Zendaya’s career. Her character, Rue, is a drug addict who struggles to get clean as she tries to navigate high school like a normal teenager. The show revolves around the intricacies of relationships, drugs, and identity amongst a group of high school students.

She won an award in the acting category in 2020 for the same role, which made her the second ever Black woman to receive the honour (the first being Viola Davis for How to Get Away with Murder).

Zendaya took to Instagram to show her appreciation and excitement for the nomination. “Making this show with this cast and crew of the most incredibly talented people that I get the privilege of learning from everyday has been a highlight of my life. I’m so proud to work beside you and CONGRATULATIONS!” she said, posting a picture of herself as Rue.

She also took to her Instagram Stories to congratulate Sydney Sweeney, who plays the role of the wildly popular Cassie Howard in Euphoria, for her Emmy nomination in the supporting actor category.
